UNDERWOOD, N.D. — Republican Mike Heger announced today, he is seeking election to the North Dakota House of Representatives to serve District 33, citing a commitment to strong rural communities, responsible energy development, and quality education for North Dakota families.

Heger, a lifelong North Dakotan and president of BNI Energy and BNI Coal, brings more than two decades of experience in energy, engineering, and community leadership. Raised on a family farm near Underwood, Heger said his roots in agriculture and energy shaped his understanding of the industries that drive North Dakota’s economy and support local communities.

“District 33 and North Dakota as a whole needs leaders who understand energy, agriculture and the role they play in our future,” Heger said. “I’m running because my experience aligns with the biggest decisions facing our state, and I want to help ensure we make smart, responsible choices for the next generation.”

A graduate of North Dakota State University with a degree in civil engineering, Heger has spent his career in the mining and energy industry, working across engineering, operations, safety, and executive management. His professional background has included extensive legislative and stakeholder engagement related to energy policy and economic development.

Heger has also been deeply involved in public service and volunteer leadership, including serving on the Underwood School Board and participating in numerous civic organizations. His priorities as a legislator include responsibly developing North Dakota’s energy resources, supporting agriculture, and addressing the unique challenges of rural North Dakota including workforce and healthcare.

“My approach to leadership begins with listening, learning, and collaboration,” Heger said. “I want to work with others to find practical solutions that keep North Dakota strong, affordable, and full of opportunity.”

Heger and his wife, Talesa, a mental health counselor and business owner in Underwood, are celebrating nearly 30 years of marriage and have five children and two grandchildren. The family returned to Underwood in 2006, where they continue to be active in the community.
